Dental InjuriesAvulsed Tooth

If a tooth has been knocked out (avulsed) rinse the tooth in warm water. Hold only the crown of the tooth not the root and then try to place the tooth back into the socket, if you are unable to reposition the tooth, place it in between the cheek and teeth. If unable to do this place it in a container with milk. Rinse mouth of any blood or debris with warm water and apply cold compress on the cheek near the injury. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be used to help control pain. Seek professional help as soon as possible.

If the tooth is loosened or dislocated but not knocked out, rinse mouth with warm water; then apply a cold compress on the cheek over the injury. Use ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and seek professional help.

If the tooth is fractured rinse with warm water, administer acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and seek professional help.

Toothache

  1. Rinse with warm water.
  2. Floss to remove any food trapped between teeth.
  3. If warm water causes and increase in pain, then rinsing with cold water may reduce symptoms.
  4. Do not put aspirin on gum next to tooth as it will cause a soft tissue burn.
  5. An over the counter toothache kit may provide temporary relief.
  6. Seek professional help

Broken Tooth

  1. Rinse mouth with warm water.
  2. Locate fractured piece, if possible, and save in water.
  3. Place cold pack on face if swelling occurs.
  4. Seek professional help.

Orthodontic Problems

  • Loose wire: Attempt to reinsert wire into bracket. If not successful, you may cut it with a wire cutter and remove the loose end.
  • Lip caught in bracket: Try to gently separate. If not successful, seek professional help.

Objects Caught Between Teeth

  1. Tie a few knots in some dental floss then take floss between teeth and drag the knots thru the space below the point where the teeth make contact.
  2. Seek professional help.

Broken Jaw

  1. Apply ice pack over injury.
  2. Do not attempt to reposition fracture.
  3. Seek professional help immediately.
