Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection of the gums and bone around the teeth. This in infection if not treated can lead to recession of the gums and bone support around the teeth. This eventually results in loss of the teeth. The infection is caused by poor oral hygiene allowing the build up of plaque, calculus, and harmful bacteria. Research has shown that periodontal infections can contribute to the incidence heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Periodontal DiseaseFactors Contributing To Periodontal Disease:

  1. Plaque
  2. Poor oral hygiene
  3. Smoking
  4. Genetic factors
  5. Stress
  6. Diet
  7. Systemic Disease
  8. Age
  9. Clenching or grinding of teeth

Signs and Symptoms:

  1. Red, swollen and bleeding gums
  2. Sore or painful gum tissue
  3. Receding gums- leading to tooth sensitivity
  4. Mobile or loose teeth
  5. Bad breath
  6. A change in your bite
  7. Increase of space between your teeth
