Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD)

TmJoint dysfunction can cause multiple symptoms such as:

  1. Pain in the joint
  2. Pain in or around the ear leading patients to believe they have and ear infection
  3. Clicking or popping noise in the joint when eating or opening and closing the mouth
  4. Limited opening of mouth
  5. Pain when chewing or biting
  6. Jaw dislocations on opening preventing the patient from closing
  7. Frequent headaches

Causes of TM Joint Pain and Dysfunction:

  1. Arthritis
  2. Trauma- Injury to the joint or muscles
  3. Bite malfunction- teeth do not fit together in a comfortable relaxed muscle position
  4. Stress
  5. Bruxism and clenching of teeth at night or during the day
  6. Missing teeth

Treatment of TM Joint Dysfunction:

  1. Do not do any unnecessary chewing- such as gum and candy.
  2. Eat soft foods.
  3. Reduce pain with- Tylenol, Aspirin, or Ibuprofen 1 hour prior to bed time and use ice packs on the joint for that 1 hour prior to bed.
  4. A night guard/bite splint can be made to reduce clenching and grinding while sleeping.
  5. Muscle relaxant medications may be helpful prior to bed time.
  6. Some cases may require physical therapy.
  7. Some cases may benefit from a bite adjustment or orthodontics.
